What are dangerous goods? | Transport of hazardous materials

Dangerous goods are any substance or product that may pose a threat to health, life, property or the environment during transportation. Their international transportation is permitted only if strict requirements are met.

To standardize transport rules, the United Nations has developed a classification system and transport standards that form the basis of regulations at the international, national and regional levels. The system precisely defines how dangerous goods should be packed, marked and labeled to ensure their safe transportation. The classification includes nine main categories, some of which are divided into subgroups, and the goods can be in solid, liquid or gaseous form. They are rated according to properties such as explosiveness, flammability, toxicity or corrosiveness.

Each substance is subjected to detailed testing to determine potential hazards. On this basis, it is assigned a UN number, an official shipping name and, in some cases, a packing group that defines the level of risk. This information is essential and is a mandatory part of dangerous goods transport documentation
